My Appalachian Ohio Trailcams – Recording Wildlife Recovery in a Renaturalized Space

  • Daytime Gray Fox & Rabbit Escape

Given they tend to be crepuscular/nocturnal, I tend not to catch gray fox on the trailcams during daylight hours. So these videos are definitely the exception. The gray fox spies the rabbit, watches, makes a move, and the rabbit slips off. The gray fox then trots towards the camera, looks to be in pretty good…

  • Bobcat Recovery

2024 saw a big change in the number of bobcat videos I was recording, and clearly of several different animals; from bobkitten to mature adult. This is a huge change as I never saw any prior to about 5 years ago. The below videos give a feel for this. There are a couple of videos…

  • Amongst my Favourite Gray Fox Videos of 2024

I feel very fortunate that the developing habitat that I maintain the trail in has met with the approval of gray fox. Although I capture them fairly regularly on video, I’ve never actually seen one when I’ve been out and about. I especially like these videos as they show two together, one in the snow,…

  • Mink Day & Night

Of all the predators I capture on the trailcams, mink is the one that I worry about the most. This is because I keep a few hens, and mink are notorious for being able to squeeze through really tight spaces. Consequently, the chicken coop and porch resembles a mini-fortress, enabling co-existence with the mink. The…

  • Possum Using its Prehensile Tail

In the Fall, possums will prepare wherever they will be denning for the Winter, lining abandoned burrows or tree hollows with dry vegetation. Their tails are prehensile, as often depicted in cartoons where you see them hanging from a tree branch. The video shows this possum using it prehensile tail to carry leaves to its…

  • Raccoon Chase

Interesting audio here, too. Chase going on, but it doesn’t sound aggressive; more playful than anything. I never really see raccoons running, more waddling. So this was unusual. I love the audio!

  • Nocturnal Red Fox

It’s unusual that we observe red fox. I suspect it’s because of the coyote population around us. Unlike the gray fox, they aren’t tree climbers and cannot use that strategy for escape. They are taller, leggier than the grays; note the dark legs.

  • Twin Fawns Nursing, Plus a Playful Collision

Over the years, I’ve seen multiple sets of twin fawns of white-tailed deer. I can’t believe how hard this must be on the mother, and the fawns can’t be described here as being gentle. I feel bad for the doe, too, as she clearly has issues with insects (flies, ticks) here. I’ve also added another…

  • Wild Turkey Families

Over the years the trailcams have been up, we’ve only had one wild turkey sighting (posted elsewhere on this blog). The summer of 2024 saw a dramatic influx, all the videos below were taken on the trailcams at the rear of the property, the quietest area. They would roost up in the trees during the…

  • Video & Audio of Squabbling Gray Foxes

First time I’ve captured three gray foxes on a video. Consulting with a wildlife biologist friend, this may be a male being chased off by another male; the female appearing later. The video isn’t fantastic, but the audio is pretty impressive.
