Gray Fox

When I originally began capturing pictures of gray fox I was so ignorant about them that I assumed I was just getting poor images of red fox, or coyotes. I also thought I’d be unlikely to see them as they are classified as a “Species of Concern” by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife. As I sprung for better cameras that activated more quickly and gave higher resolution, I began collecting much better pictures and videos. They really are gorgeous.

When I first began recording them, I suspected a juvenile had just moved in. Later, I recorded two together on a video. Based upon their habits, I think it’s likely they den on an undisturbed slope above the creek. Given the shear number of squirrels, rabbits, and assorted rodents around they have plenty of prey animals available. They will also eat insects, berries, reptiles, vegetable matter, and birds, so they are pretty opportunistic when it comes to food sources. I also did not know they were tree climbers until I began reading about them, which has to be advantage that protects them against coyotes. Consequently, I find myself scanning trees looking for one! As of yet I have never seen one, except on the trailcams.
