A recent severe storm resulted in a section of our creek bed being scoured, removing a lot of dead and living vegetation as well as sediments. This has made it easy to walk along, figure out potential spots to place trail cams. The camera used in the following videos is mounted on a T-post driven 2-3 feet into the creek bed, using an attachment that makes raising/lowering it easy based upon potential creek flow. The first week the camera was there a migrating juvenile Cooper’s hawk visited the same spot on two consecutive days; taking a bath, drinking, and looking for snacks (maybe frogs?). As well as being persecuted, Cooper’s hawks were severely impacted by DDT but, over the last several decades, their population has significantly recovered. I expect I’ll do a separate post featuring birdlife from the same spot as it does seem popular with avian species.
