My Appalachian Ohio Trailcams – Recording Wildlife Recovery in a Renaturalized Space

  • Tree Climbing Groundhog

Groundhog, despite their size, are surprisingly impressive climbers. The burrow of this particular guy/gal is just to the right of where this trailcam is mounted, and I see him/her on a routine basis. But this is the first time I’ve caught them climbing a tree.

  • Coyote Matching the Autumn Colours

I don’t often get coyotes in daytime videos, so this is definitely an exception to the rule. I was struck by the match between the colours of the coyote and the surrounding vegetation. In common with other nocturnal videos I have captured, the coyote displays a certain skittishness. Was it sensing the camera?

  • Bobcat Activity in the Fall, Featuring a Mother and Two Juveniles

I’ve increasingly captured bobcat activity on my trailcams over the last few years. These videos are particularly special to me as they were taken over a short time period and feature a mother out with what would have been her bobkittens from earlier in the year, plus the last video in this set has what…

  • Gray Fox & Bobcat Chasing Each Other

The sequence of videos shows in interaction between a gray fox and bobcat Luckily for the fox, the bobcat was a juvenile otherwise this could have ended rather differently. The gray fox showed a lot of spunk, and its good to see these species recovering together.

  • Southern Flying Squirrel

Although considered common in this neck of the woods, Southern Flying Squirrels are rarely seen due to their nocturnal behaviour and diminutive stature. It was a treat to check my SD cards this evening and clearly capture video of one leaping between a couple of small black walnut trees. This was the first time I’ve…

  • “Fruitavore” Gray Fox

Of course, gray fox are omnivores. Their diet consisting of small mammals, birds, eggs, insects, reptiles, vegetable matter, nuts, fruit; so the title of this post is less than accurate. I have several apple trees and the gray fox have been enjoying the fruit the last couple of months. I dumped a couple of buckets…

  • Pair of Gray Fox

Pair of gray fox interacting, they look in great shape going into the Winter. The audio here is really interesting, too. The day/time is wrong as I forgot to correct them when I replaced the batteries, but the video was taken during the night of November 16 2023.

  • Wild Turkey & 5 Chicks

A sign of woodland maturation is wild turkey moving in. Although I’ve seen wild turkey nearby, I’ve never captured video of one on my trailcams. This is an exciting development, especially as the mom has 5 chicks!

  • Fawn, Coyote, and Trailcam Glow Intervening

I’ve noticed coyotes being spooked by the red glow the trailcams give off when triggered at night. The first video shows a coyote pursuing a fawn, note its plaintive cries. When the fawn runs back past the trailcam the coyote continues its pursuit, but immediately halts and retreats due to the red glow. In the…

  • Mother Raccoon with a Couple of Youngsters

The videos below are from the Summers of 2021 and 2022. I routinely observe raccoons on each of my trailcams throughout the year. These videos are a bit different as they show an adult, that I assume is the mother, with a couple of playful juveniles.
